Not that big a deal, but you can format your Gmail Talk Statuses in Gmail and include some special characters.
Bold and Italics
Get bold or italics using Textile-like commands. Surround text with underscores “_” for italics, or asteriks “*” for bold.
For example, enter _Really_ Busy to display Really Busy.
Update: you can now strike through text by surround text with hypens, as in strike through is -not- supported in Gmail chat to display strike through is .not supported in Gmail chat
However, adjacent punctuation seems to throw it off. If it doesn’t work, try surrounding the formatted text with spaces.
Special Characters
Also, copy/paste ASCII characters into the status, such as ♫♪ if you’re, well, listening to music.

Please note that the character you mention in “Special Characters” is not ASCII, it is Unicode (in UTF-8 it is coded on 3 bytes : 0xE2, 0×99, 0xAB).

[...] Currently Gmail Chat does not support formatting like Yahoo or others do. But there are some things you can do to spice up the experience, such as it is. Some of this applies to Gtalk, some doesn’t. Previously, we’ve covered bold, italics, and special characters (like ♫). We also noted that Google added an incoming-chat sound and the ability to add a picture to a Gmail contact. [...]

The best part about gchat is that there are no annoying smileys and it’s just pure chat!

@ryan smith – just surround the text you wish to bold with asterisks. For instance, *bold text* will be rendered as bold text.

is there a way to turn this off? i don’t like not using * to show action when i’m chatting >_<*
15 bill // May 2, 2008 at 12:22 pm
@allie98 – I don’t think so. Improvise, overcome, adapt.
16 Elias // May 26, 2008 at 7:31 pm
@allie98, format your text like **this** it will make it bold but also use them for showing action.

Also, if you put hyphens around a sentence there will be a line through it. -Like so-

@Sharad, now that is a useful comment. Thanks. This looks like a recent addition to Gmail chat.
